What It Is

Relax the lines, keep the expression.

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription neuromodulator — a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. When a qualified medical provider places small, precise amounts into specific facial muscles, it temporarily reduces the contractions that fold the skin into dynamic wrinkles. Those are the lines that deepen when you frown, raise your brows, or squint. Ease the muscle just enough and the skin above it relaxes, so the lines soften.

It belongs to the same family of treatments as Botox, and the goal at THRIVE is never a frozen, over-done look. We treat conservatively so your face still moves, still expresses, and still reads as you — just more rested. Dysport is one of several options within our broader medical aesthetics menu, and the right choice is always individualized to you.

  • iTargeted. Placed into specific muscles to soften dynamic lines, not freeze your face.
  • iiTemporary. Results build over a few days and typically last about three to four months.
  • iiiIndividualized. Dosing and placement are mapped to your anatomy and goals at a medical assessment.
How It Works

The science behind a softer line, explained simply.

Every time you make an expression — furrowing your brow, lifting your forehead, crinkling at the corners of your eyes — the muscles underneath contract and pull the skin into a crease. Repeat that thousands of times over the years and the creases start to stay, even when your face is at rest. Those settled-in lines are what most people want to soften.

What Dysport actually does

Dysport works at the point where nerves signal muscle to contract. By briefly limiting that signal in the precise spots your provider treats, the targeted muscle relaxes and stops pulling so hard on the skin. The crease above it has a chance to smooth out. Because the effect is temporary, the muscle gradually regains its normal activity over the following months, which is why treatments are repeated.

Dynamic lines vs. static lines

Neuromodulators like Dysport are designed for dynamic wrinkles — the ones driven by muscle movement. Lines that are deeply etched and visible even when your face is completely still are called static lines, and they sometimes respond better to a different approach, or to a combination of treatments. Part of a good consultation is figuring out which kind of line you have and what will genuinely help. If a different treatment is a better fit, we’ll tell you.

Dysport vs. Botox

Two excellent tools — neither one is “better.”

One of the most common questions we hear is whether Dysport or Botox is the right choice. The honest answer: both are well-established botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators, both are administered the same way, and both produce smooth, natural-looking results in the right hands. They are more alike than different. The choice between them is individualized and made together with your provider — it is not a question of one product being superior.

How they’re similar

Both relax targeted facial muscles to soften dynamic lines. Both treat the same common areas. Both are temporary, with results that build over days and gradually fade over months. And in skilled hands, both are capable of the soft, expressive results we aim for.

The general, fair differences

Dysport tends to diffuse — spread slightly more from each injection point — which can be an advantage across larger, broader areas like the forehead, where smooth, even softening is the goal. Some patients also feel Dysport “kicks in” a little faster, sometimes noticing changes within a couple of days. The two products are also measured in different units, so comparing them dose-for-dose isn’t meaningful (more on that in the FAQ). None of this makes one product better; it simply means your provider may favor one for a particular area or for how your own muscles respond.

An honest note. Dysport softens dynamic lines — it does not lift sagging skin, fill volume loss, or change skin texture. If your concern is volume, deeper folds, or surface quality, your provider may recommend dermal fillers, resurfacing, or a combination instead. We’ll always be candid about what Dysport can and can’t do.

Areas We Treat

Where Dysport does its best work.

Dysport is most often used in the upper face, where muscle movement creates the lines people most want to soften. Your provider maps each treatment to your individual anatomy — the way your muscles move — rather than following a one-size-fits-all template.

Frown lines (the “11s”)

The vertical lines between the brows, often called the glabella or the “11s,” can make you look tense, tired, or upset even when you feel fine. Softening the muscles that draw the brows together is one of the most requested — and most satisfying — uses of Dysport.

Forehead lines

The horizontal lines that appear when you raise your eyebrows respond well to careful treatment. Because the forehead is a broader area, Dysport’s tendency to diffuse a little more can lend itself to smooth, even results here — and a conservative dose keeps your brows mobile and expressive rather than flat.

Crow’s feet

The fine lines that fan out from the outer corners of the eyes when you smile or squint are another classic area. Treated thoughtfully, the result is a softer, brighter eye area that still creases naturally when you smile — never a mask-like stillness.

During your consultation we’ll discuss which areas are appropriate for you, what a realistic outcome looks like, and how Dysport fits alongside the rest of our aesthetic treatments. Results vary from person to person, and we never guarantee a specific outcome.

What To Expect

From first visit to a refreshed reflection.

The appointment

A Dysport treatment is quick and done right in our Lakeway clinic. After your provider cleanses the area and confirms the plan, the product is placed with a very fine needle into the mapped muscles. Most appointments take only a few minutes, and many patients describe the sensation as small, brief pinches. There’s no general anesthesia and you drive yourself home.

The first few days

Downtime is minimal for most people. You may have small bumps or slight redness at the injection sites that settle within a short time, and occasionally a little bruising. Your provider will share simple aftercare guidance — such as staying upright for a few hours, avoiding rubbing the area, and skipping vigorous exercise that day. Most people return to normal activities right away.

The timeline of results

Dysport doesn’t work instantly. Many patients begin to notice softening within a couple of days, with the full effect typically settling in over about a week as the treated muscles relax. From there, results generally last roughly three to four months before the muscle activity gradually returns and a maintenance treatment is considered. Results vary by individual, and your provider will help you find your own rhythm.

Where Dysport fits in your bigger picture

Neuromodulators address movement-driven lines, but a refreshed look often comes from combining treatments thoughtfully. Depending on your goals, your provider may pair Dysport with dermal fillers for volume, SkinPen microneedling for texture, a medical-grade facial for overall skin health, or red light therapy as part of a longer-term plan — building a complete approach rather than a single treatment.

Is It Right For You?

Honest fit, real expectations.

Dysport is one of several ways to address the signs of aging, and the best choice depends entirely on you — your concerns, your anatomy, your medical history, and your goals. Some patients are ideal candidates; others are better served by a different treatment, and we’ll be candid about that at your consultation.

Dysport is often a good fit for adults who

  • Are bothered by dynamic lines — frown lines, forehead lines, or crow’s feet — driven by muscle movement.
  • Want a subtle, natural-looking softening rather than a dramatic or “done” appearance.
  • Are generally healthy and seeking a maintainable, non-surgical refresh.
  • Value an individualized, provider-led plan over a generic, off-the-shelf treatment.

Dysport may not be the answer when

Certain medical histories, neuromuscular conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, or the nature of the lines themselves may mean Dysport isn’t appropriate — or that another approach is wiser. That’s exactly what the medical assessment is for. If Dysport isn’t right for you, we’ll recommend what is. Treatment is always a shared, informed decision made with a qualified medical provider.

The THRIVE difference

Why The Injector Matters

Same product, very different results.

With neuromodulators, the product is only part of the story — the skill and judgment of the person administering it matters enormously. Dysport is a prescription medication, and natural-looking results depend on precise placement, the right conservative dose, and a real understanding of how your individual face moves.

Experience you can see in the mirror

An experienced injector reads your facial anatomy, balances the muscles that lift against the ones that pull down, and treats just enough — preserving the movement and expression that make you look like yourself. Over-treatment is what produces the frozen look people fear; thoughtful, restrained treatment is what produces a rested, natural one.

A medical setting, start to finish

At THRIVE, your treatment is performed in-clinic by a qualified medical provider after a medical assessment — never as a rushed add-on. Kristine Kjolhede, FNP-C and the THRIVE team take time to understand your goals and to set honest expectations before anything is administered.

Conservative by philosophy

Our approach is to start measured and refine. It’s far easier to add a touch more at a follow-up than to wait out an over-treated result — so we err toward subtle, then adjust to you. Natural-looking results aren’t an accident; they’re a deliberate, careful choice.

Safe, Supervised Care

Dysport done the right way.

Dysport has a long, well-established track record when it’s used appropriately, dosed individually, and administered by a qualified medical provider — and that’s exactly how we practice. It is never a casual, walk-in-and-guess treatment.

Medical assessment before anything else

We begin with a consultation and medical assessment to review your health history, the medications you take, any prior aesthetic treatments, and the specific concerns you want to address. This is where we confirm whether Dysport is appropriate for you and discuss general benefits and what to expect, in plain language.

General, temporary side effects

As with any injectable, there can be temporary side effects — most commonly mild and short-lived effects at the injection site such as redness, small bumps, tenderness, or occasional bruising. Headache and other general effects are also possible. Your provider will review the relevant considerations with you, and because Dysport is a prescription neuromodulator, treatment requires a medical assessment and is only provided when it’s appropriate for you.

Informed, shared decisions

We discuss the cosmetic nature of the treatment, its temporary results, and the fact that individual outcomes vary and are never guaranteed. You’ll never feel pressured. If Dysport isn’t the right step — or if a different treatment in our aesthetics menu would serve you better — we’ll say so.
