What Is Body Composition Analysis?
Body composition analysis breaks your weight down into its parts — how much is muscle, how much is fat, how much is water, and how that’s distributed throughout your body. The InBody is a body-composition measurement tool that uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). You stand on the platform and hold the handgrips while the device sends a very low, painless electrical current through your body. Because muscle (which holds a lot of water) conducts that current differently than fat does, the device can estimate the proportions of each. The whole process takes about a minute and gives you a detailed printout instead of a single number.
It’s worth being precise about what this is and isn’t: BIA is an estimate, not a diagnosis. Research comparing it against reference methods such as DXA scans shows that multi-frequency, segmental devices can track body composition reasonably well, though results are affected by hydration, recent meals, exercise, and time of day. That’s why we standardize how and when measurements are taken — consistency over time is where the real value lives.
Why the Scale Alone Falls Short
Two people can weigh exactly the same and be in very different states of health. One might carry more muscle and less fat; the other the reverse. The scale can’t tell them apart — and it can’t tell you when a “stuck” weight is actually masking real progress, such as gaining muscle while losing fat at the same time.
This matters because where and what kind of fat you carry affects health more than total weight does. A person can fall within a “normal” BMI and still carry elevated levels of the fat that drives metabolic risk. Body composition analysis helps surface that picture instead of hiding it inside one number.

What the InBody Measures
A body composition report gives you several data points that, together, paint a fuller picture than weight alone:
- Skeletal muscle mass — an estimate of the muscle that powers your metabolism, strength, and day-to-day function, often broken down by body segment.
- Body fat percentage — fat as a share of your total body, a more meaningful indicator than weight by itself.
- Visceral fat — an estimate of the deeper fat stored around your abdominal organs, which research links more strongly to metabolic risk than the fat just under the skin.
- Total body water — your hydration status and how fluid is distributed, including the balance between intracellular and extracellular water.
Why Visceral Fat Deserves Special Attention
Not all fat behaves the same way. Subcutaneous fat — the soft, pinchable kind just under the skin — makes up most of the body’s fat and carries relatively few health concerns. Visceral fat is different. It sits deep in the abdomen and wraps around organs like the liver and pancreas, and it’s metabolically active in ways that can influence blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Because you can’t see or pinch it, an objective estimate is genuinely useful — and the encouraging news is that visceral fat tends to respond well to changes in activity, nutrition, and overall lifestyle as part of a broader plan.

A body composition report is most useful as a starting point, not a verdict.
